2) 📝 Match up!
This activity is a great way to get students excited about learning new words at the start of the school year. It’s flexible, easy to set up, and perfect for language classrooms in September. Here are a few fun ways you can use it in your lesson:
-
Brighten up your classroom
Get pupils to colour in and cut out the vocabulary cards, then use them to create a colourful classroom display! It’s a lovely way for children to take ownership of their new learning space and revisit useful school-themed words every day. -
Memory match game
Cut up the cards so the words and pictures are separate. Pupils can then work alone or in pairs to play a memory game, turning over two cards at a time to find matching pairs. The challenge? They have to remember where the cards are and match the picture to the correct word! -
Quick-fire listening challenge
Call out one of the words in the target language, and have pupils hold up the matching image or word card. This can be played as a whole class game, in small teams, or even as a warm-up activity. -
Creative extension task
Once pupils are confident with the set vocabulary, challenge them to create their own labels for classroom items that aren’t already included. It’s a great way to personalise the learning and extend vocabulary. -
Take the learning further
You could also upload the vocabulary set to the Languagenut platform as a bespoke content pack. This gives students the chance to consolidate their learning at home or during IT time, through games and quizzes that reinforce key words.
