Celebrate European Day of Languages with Languagenut!
European Day of Languages takes place on 26th September, celebrating the rich diversity of languages and cultures across Europe. It’s a great opportunity to encourage students to step beyond the language they are learning in the classroom, discover new languages and have fun with language learning.
To help you celebrate, we’ve created Languagenut Explorer Passports for Primary and Secondary students a fun, interactive way to turn European Day of Languages into a language-learning challenge.
Explore, learn and collect badges
Each passport contains a collection of challenges that students can complete through activities on the Languagenut platform. Every time they complete a challenge, they can collect the corresponding badge in their passport.
For Primary students, challenges include completing activities on topics such as animals, colours and food, practising phonics, building sentences and developing listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. There are also opportunities to explore different languages, discover less commonly taught languages and become a Super Polyglot by completing activities in five different languages.
The Secondary passport focuses on building and challenging language skills, with badges linked to vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking, grammar, sentence building and verbs. Students can also take on challenges such as finding cognates, practising pronunciation, working with verbs across three tenses and exploring different topics. And there’s an extra challenge for everyone: collect 10 badges to become a European Day Champion!
How to use the passport in your classroom
The passport can be used flexibly throughout your European Day of Languages celebrations. You could:
- Set it as a lesson challenge: Give students their passport and allow them to work through as many challenges as they can during a lesson.
- Make it a class competition: Challenge students to collect the most badges or become the first European Day Champion.
- Encourage language exploration: Let students try activities in languages they haven’t studied before and discover similarities between languages.
- Use it across the day or week: Rather than completing everything in one lesson, set different challenges throughout your European Day of Languages activities.
- Celebrate achievements: Give students time to share their favourite challenges, new words they’ve discovered or the badges they’re most proud of.
The passports are designed to make language learning active, varied and rewarding, while giving students a reason to explore beyond their usual language lessons.
